Ra was the Egyptian sun god and is often represented as a falcon crowned with a sun disk and this snake. This is the chief god of the Egyptian pantheon, solar symbol, who gave life and guarantor of the Egyptian concept of death and resurrection and the Pharaohs were considered his sons.

Legend says that Ra created the gods and everything and that he was the first pharaoh of Egypt. He ruled Egypt for thousands of years until he ascended to heaven to accompany the sun on its way aboard his sacred boat. Ra visit the underworld every night and every morning is a victory against the forces of darkness.
During the Old Kingdom became the national god of Egypt. Later in Thebes he was assimilated to Amon, resulting Amun-Ra.

Some pharaohs used the name of Ra in his own name, such as Khafre, who was the first to adopt his name or Mycerinus (Menkaure) that means: Eternal as the Ka Ra

It was also common among the pharaohs the Sa-Ra name or birth name: Son of Ra

Ra was depicted with falcon-headed man crowned with a sun disk, but also would be represented by a beetle, a winged sun disk or a ram. Ra was the sun shining and soaring through the sky on his solar boat.

There were temples dedicated to Ra in Heliopolis and Abu Gurab.
