The leading philosophers of ancient Greece were:

  • The Presocratics
  • Socrates
  • Plato
  • Aristotle


Rational Thought and the Presocratics

In ancient Greece it emerged a new way of dealing with nature: the explanations of natural phenomena must be logical and rational. Rational thought and the foundations of the scientific method begins with the pre-Socratic: Pythagoras, Thales, Anaximander or Herácrito of Ephesus are clear examples

Socrates (470 B.C. -. 399 A.C.)

Although not kept any of his paper, his thought has come through Plato. He tried to create a rational morality. He was accused of corrupting the youth and finally condemned to drink the hemlock and died.


Plato (428 B.C. -. ¿347-348 A.C.)

He was the most prominent disciple of Socrates and Aristotle grandmaster. Thanks to the work of Plato thought Socrates know. Their philosophy revolves around human reason.


Aristotle (384 B.C. -. 322 A.C.)

He was a pupil of Plato and teacher of Alexander the Great once. It gave human reason's ability to know the world using your logic, thinking correctly. His work was huge on variety of topics.


The result of the emergence of rational thinking in Greece was the development of science as we know them today:

  • Astronomy, among many other advances, with the heliocentric theory proposed by Aristarchus of Samos, although it was not accepted.
  • Mathematics, Euclid.
  • Physics, Archimedes, etc.
  • Medicine, Hippocrates.
