Art of the Paleolithic
The Paleolithic art has left us masterpieces whose beauty is not minor to the current works and reflect the environment in which the artists lived.
The purpose of art during the Paleolithic is related to religious rituals, being common themes hunting and sex. In the paintings they are often represented animals and hunting scenes and they are frequent female figurines enhancing their sexual attributes, probably related to the cult of fertility.
Examples of works of Paleolithic art are:
- Cave paintings such as the caves of Lascaux or Altamira caves.
- Batons as the Pendo.
- The Bison Madeleine on reindeer antler.
- Female sculptures such as the Venus of Willendorf.
