Venus von Willendorf 02

The art during Paleolithic has left us true masterpieces whose beauty is not inferior to the current works and reflect the environment in which the artists lived.

The purpose of art during the Paleolithic is related to religious rituals common themes being hunting and sex. In the paintings they are represented with animals and hunting scenes often while they are frequent female figurines enhancing their sexual attributes, probably related to the cult of fertility.

Examples of works of Paleolithic art are:

  • Cave paintings such as the caves of Lascaux or Altamira caves.
  • Batons as the Pendo.
  • The Bison Madeleine on reindeer antler.
  • Female sculptures such as the Venus of Willendorf.
