Architecture in Ancient Rome

The main elements that differentiated from the rest of Roman architecture was the extensive use of the bow, the invention of the vaults and Roman mortar. It is the equivalent of our concrete, formed by small pebbles, sand, lime and water. The use of vaults is a real architectural revolution that allowed the construction of public places with large interior spaces. Good examples of the unique Roman architecture are:

  • The Colosseum
  • The Pantheon

Roman sculptures = = Roman sculpture imitated the Greek techniques and reaches great heights of perfection. Busts and portraits of reach faithfully reflect the model and practically come to life. It was common in every house busts and portraits of ancestors, those who came to render a real cult preserved.
In the reliefs that decorate public buildings mainly scenes are depicted with great realism.

The paintings and mosaics decorating walls and floors of Roman buildings. They served to hide the materials used for the construction of buildings. They reached great perfection and beauty. They have come down to us beautiful examples, the best preserved are covering the eruption of Vesuvius in Pompeii and Herculaneum.
